Training
Obedience Training is one of the best things you can do for your dog or puppy... and yourself. Obedience training doesn't solve all behaviour problems, but it is the foundation for solving just about any problem. Training opens up a line of communication between you and your dog which is necessary to instruct your dog about what you want him to do. You can teach him anything from 'wait' (don't run out the door) to 'sit' (don't jump up on the visitors)to 'leave it' (don't chew the furniture).
Dogs are social animals and without proper training, they will behave like animals. Nearly all behaviour problems are perfectly normal canine activities that occur at the wrong time or place or are directed at the wrong thing. The key to preventing or treating behaviour problems is learning to teach the dog to redirect his natural behavior to outlets that are acceptable in the domestic setting.
Obedience training is an easy way to establish the social hierarchy.
When your dog obeys a simple request of 'come or sit,' he is showing compliance and respect for you. It is
not necessary to establish yourself as top dog or leader of the pack by using extreme
measures. You can help your dog understand his role in your family hierarchy
through teaching basic manners.
"Watch a puppy, any puppy, learning at his mother's knee. He'd give her the world to hear the right tone sung from high in her throat, to be allowed to cuddle, to be petted by her smooth tongue. Moreover, his motivation to learn is built in. There's a world he's dying to explore. There are things he'd like to know. He watches everything. He experiments. He tries and tries again to meet each challenge, to learn, to expand his world, his skills, his knowledge. Like any fledgling, his curiosity triggers learning. When there are no major temptations such as food rewards to tug his mind away from the work at hand, he praises, himself, he feels good to have done something new, and to have done it right." ~ Carol Lea Benjamin
